Take Your Hair Back In Time

Hair treatments are not just for hair loss. In a recent survey by Dr. Oz, 54% of women stated that hair concerns were there primary concern of aging. As our population ages, more and more people are looking for ways to turn back the clock on aging. Hair is an essential part of this process. As we age we begin to add more chemicals, heat, and harmful hair care products to our daily regiment. Have you looked in the mirror lately and saw a head of hair that was dull, listless, and flat and wondered was there a solution to rejuvenate your mane? Below are some of the top causes of aging hair.

Limp, Flat Hair

Limpness is frequently caused by over-active oil glands, which can weigh hair down at the roots. Flat hair can occur when strands have been stripped of moisture. A bad cut can also cause locks to appear lifeless. Has your hair lost its luster and elasticity? An irregular cuticle surface exposes the strand’s inner core, dulling it. Many factors can damage your cuticle: too much heat exposure while styling, chemical processing, sun, chlorine, dry winter air, over-brushing and too many silicone-based products.

Dry hair

Dry hair occurs when your hair does not receive enough moisture. This reduces its sheen and can make your hair appear frizzy, lifeless, and dull. Dry hair can affect men and women of any age.

Sheen and luster are two important signs of healthy hair. Your hair consists of three layers. In healthy hair, the outer layer thoroughly protects the inner layers. Natural oils in the outer layer also reflect light, making your hair shiny. In cases of dry hair, the outer layer breaks down, which causes the hair to appear dull and unhealthy.

There is no single cause of dry hair. Rather, a variety of factors can lead to dry hair, including environmental conditions, hair care habits, and your physical health. Environmental conditions that may cause dry hair include:

  • living in a dry, hot climate
  • spending a lot of time in the sun
  • frequently swimming in chlorinated water

Certain hair-care practices also contribute to dry hair. These include washing your hair too often, using harsh shampoos and conditioners, getting frequent chemical treatments, blow-drying your hair daily, and using electric curling irons or straighteners.

In some cases, dry hair is the result of a health problem that makes it difficult for your hair to retain moisture. The following health conditions can dry out your hair.

Oily hair

Oily hair actually originates from an oily scalp. Sebaceous glands, located in the scalp’s skin tissue, produce sebum. Sebum is a primary part of hair health because it locks in moisture. However, if too much sebum is produced, the hair will absorb it and become oily. Hormonal imbalances can make the sebaceous glands produce more sebum than they’re supposed to. Once hormones are balanced again, though, the production of sebum will slow down.

Excessive use of styling products is one of the major causes of oily hair. When you apply multiple products to your scalp, they start to pile on top of each other, forming a waxy, oily buildup. In order to prevent this buildup from happening, you should reduce the amount of products you apply to your hair at any given time, and try to stay away from oil-based products. If you suffer from dry hair, it is okay to apply oils to the ends of your hair, but keep the product away from your scalp.

Improper diet can lead to oily, greasy hair. Your hair is made out of keratin, a protein that is also found in fingernails, and around 12% of hair is water. That’s why hydration and diet are important for healthy hair. Everything that we eat and drink influences our bodily functions and the production of skin oil and other fluids is also dependent on diet. Minerals and vitamins are important for healthy hair and for avoiding oily hair. Vitamin E, which is actually a part of sebum, is quite important for hair along with the vitamin B complex and iron.

Hydrogenated oils contain trans-fats which can have a bad effect on your hair and skin. All chemically processed vegetable oils should be avoided. It is better to opt for fats and oils which contain fat soluble vitamins (A, B, D, K), such as butter, coconut oil, grape seed oil and eggs.
